Um der notwendigen Aktualität von Siedlungsflächenkartierungen zu entsprechen, bietet sich die Satellitenfernerkundung als innovatives Erhebungsverfahren mit der Möglichkeit hochaktueller Datengewinnung an. In der Untersuchung wurden drei Methoden der Flächennutzungsänderungskartierung (Change Detection-Methoden) dezidiert für einen Untersuchungsraum angewendet und bezüglich Leistungsfähigkeit und Prozessierungsaufwand verglichen. Schwerpunkt ist die Detektion neuer Bebauung bzw. Bauflächen. Soll nur eine Kartierung neuer Siedlungsflächen erfolgen, so ist ein visueller Vergleich einer aktuellen mit einer entsprechend älteren Aufnahme mit Abgrenzung neuer Siedlungsflächen auf Basis einer logischen Suche das einfachste, sicherste und kostengünstigste Verfahren. Sollen im Ergebnis auch flächendeckende Landnutzungsqualifikationen vorliegen, so ermöglicht die Überlagerung mehrerer Bilder der individuellen Klassifikation mit anschließender adaptiver Filterung die Kartierung der Änderungsflächen. Die Kartierung neuer Siedlungsflächen allein auf Basis signifikanter Vegetationsabnahme bedingt hingegen nur ungenügende Ergebnisse.
