Die Idee zu dieser Studie entstand aus meiner mehrjährigen Mitarbeit im DFG-Projekt Risikokommunikation über Gentechnologie (vgl. Ruhrmann/ Gürke/Kohring 1992). Zunächst plante ich eine Untersuchung zur journalistischen Berichterstattung über Risiken und Chancen der wissenschaftlich technischen Entwicklung. Schon bald stellte sich heraus, daß die Forschung über Risikoberichterstattung nicht nur eng mit der Forschung über Wissenschaftsberichterstattung verknüpft, sondern sogar Mitte der siebziger Jahre aus ihr hervorgegangen ist. Die Anfänge der Wissenschaftsjournalismus-Forschung reichen dagegen bis in die ersten Jahrzehnte dieses Jahrhunderts zurück. Um so gravierender ist es, daß dennoch keine zusammenhängende Theorie des Wissenschaftsjournalismus existiert. Es gibt nicht einmal eine zusammenfassende Darstellung der bisherigen Forschung, die für eine derartige Theorie herangezogen werden könnte. Die vorliegende Studie schließt diese Lücke. Erstmalig wird eine umfassende Darstellung der deutschsprachigen und angloamerikanischen Wissenschaftsjournalismus-Forschung vorgelegt. Als roter Faden dient die Frage nach der gesellschaftlichen Funktion journalistischer Berichterstattung über Wissenschaft, Technik und Medizin. Für die ausführliche Diskussion der deutschsprachigen Forschung wurden (bis auf die DDR) alle relevanten Arbeiten berücksichtigt.
