Der herrenlose Samurai Nomi Kanjuro (Takaaki Nomi) kann wegen einer motorischen Störung sein Schwert nicht einsetzen. Darum wird er von allen nur belächelt und zieht mit seiner neunmalklugen Tochter Tae (Sea Kumada) durchs Land. Als ein Kopfgeld auf ihn ausgesetzt wird, machen drei Killer Jagd auf ihn - aber ohne Erfolg. Dafür gelingt es den Behörden, ihn zu schnappen. Der Herrscher (Jun Kunimura) will ihn begnadigen, wenn Nomi innert 30 Tagen seinen kleinen Sohn zum Lachen bringt, der seine Mutter verloren hat. Schafft er dies nicht, muss er Seppuku begehen: rituellen Selbstmord. ... wer auf eine Komödie steht, die nicht auf vorgetretenen Pfaden wandelt, und auch den Mut hat, durchaus etwas Sentimentalität ins Spiel zu bringen, der ist bei "Saya Zamurai" richtig. Der Film ist vorzüglich gespielt, manche Comedy-Szenen sind perfekt getaktet, und wer am Ende nicht immerhin ein wenig gerührt ist, hat ein kaltes Herz. Mutiges Kino wie dieses sollte man belohnen. Man wird als Zuschauer ja auch belohnt - mit einem ganz speziellen Film, der voll und ganz Hitoshi Matsumoto widerspiegelt. Sprich: einzigartig ist. (Molodezhnaja)
