Jean-Étienne Liotard gehört zu den bedeutendsten und zugleich eigenwilligsten Künstlern des 18. Jahrhunderts. Entlang von Haut, Farbe und Medialität eröffnet das Buch einen grundlegend neuen und vertieften Blick auf das spezifische Bildverständnis dieses ungebührend wenig beachteten, bis nach Konstantinopel gereisten und an den wichtigsten Höfen in ganz Europa tätigen Malers. Mit «Haut», einem Begriff, der in den historischen Quellenschriften der Vormoderne als eine zentrale Metapher für Oberflächenphänomene fungierte, rücken so grundlegende Themen wie die transkulturelle Bildnismaskerade, Wahrheit und Trug («Schminke») in der Malerei oder die Verflechtung des ästhetischen und medizinischen Diskurses in in den Fokus der Untersuchung. Ausgehend von den schriftlichen Zeugnissen des Malers sowie der breiten kunsttheoretischen Quellenbasis jener Zeit macht die Autorin die hohe Originalität, materiale Sensibilität, aber auch künstlerische Widerständigkeit des breiten und technisch besonders vielfältigen Werks von Liotard in seinem historischen Kontext sichtbar.
