Obwohl der Brief in der deutschen Geschichtswissenschaft zwischen dem 19. und 21. Jahrhundert zu den unverzichtbaren materiellen Grundlagen der wissenschaftlichen Praxis zählte, hat dieser in der fachgeschichtlichen Reflexion nur selten eigenständig Aufmerksamkeit erfahren. Der Band untersucht Briefe von, an und über Historiker in historiographie- und wissenschaftsgeschichtlicher, aber auch in kulturhistorischer Hinsicht, als Arbeitsinstrument und Kommunikationsmittel, als Ausdruck individueller Sinnwelten wie kultureller Prägungen und fragt nicht zuletzt auch nach den Grenzen seiner Bedeutung angesichts der Etablierung anderer Kommunikationsformen. Die Beiträge des Bandes belegen nachdrücklich, dass der Gebrauch von Briefen wie auch ihre sinngebende Wirkung sowohl eine den untersuchten Zeiträumen jeweils eigene fachliche Briefkultur als auch langfristig wirksame, gegebenenfalls widersprüchliche Briefkulturen geformt hat.
