Zusammenfassung Aussage und Wert eines Kunstwerkes hängen in besonderem Maße von der Künstlerpersönlichkeit ab, mit der man es verbindet. Dennoch kommt es vor, dass Kunstschaffende die Verbindung zu einem Werk lösen wollen, etwa weil sie sich nicht mehr mit ihm identifizieren können oder weil es sich um eine Fälschung handelt. Juliane Kotzur untersucht unter rechtlichen Gesichtspunkten, auf welche Art und Weise ein Werk verstoßen werden kann: von der einfachen Weigerung, es öffentlich anzuerkennen, bis hin zur Forderung, das Werkstück zu vernichten. Als starkes Gegengewicht werden dabei die Interessen des Eigentümers des betreffenden Kunstwerkes berücksichtigt. Die Integrität und der Wert seines Sacheigentums würden durch eine Desavouierung des Werkes mitunter schwer beeinträchtigt. Dieser Konflikt zwischen Eigentümer und Urheber währt mitunter lang, setzt er sich nach dessen Tod doch mit seinen Erben und Angehörigen fort.
