Die Arbeit konstituiert einen Männlichkeitstypus in der russischen Literatur der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts und verfolgt dessen Entwicklung von mitleidserregenden, insektenartigen Figuren (Gogols 'Der Mantel', Cechovs 'Der Mann im Futteral', Andreevs 'Am Fenster') zu selbstbewussten Mördern (Dostoevskijs 'Die Sanfte', Tolstojs 'Kreutzersonate', Tolstajas 'Wessen Schuld', Andreevs 'Im Nebel'). Eine zentrale Stellung nimmt dabei Dostoevskijs 'Untergrundmensch' ('Aufzeichnungen aus dem Untergrund') ein, dessen Variationen sich durch zahlreiche Texte der Zeit ziehen. Die Studie zeigt, welche Rolle die pathologische Einsamkeit der Figuren auf der narrativen Ebene spielt, und welche Funktion dabei Geschlechterverhältnisse und sozialhistorische Rangordnungen einnehmen. Methodisch orientiert sie sich an den Geschlechter- und Männlichkeitsstudien des Poststrukturalismus. Die Analyse der Texte zeigt die Hilflosigkeit eines einsamen, verunsicherten männlichen Subjekts auf, das gegen eine gesellschaftliche Ordnung rebelliert.
