A three-part profile of the life and work of the pioneering American film director, D.W. Griffith. Features interviews with pivotal figures in his career, including leading actors Lillian Gish and Blanche Sweet, screenwriter Anita Loos, cinematographers Karl Brown and Stanley Cortez, and members of Griffith's family. Presents several previously undiscovered films, as well as extracts from major productions. These include: `Intolerance' (1916), `Hearts of the World' (1918), `The Storm' (1921); `Way Down East' (1920) and `The Birth of a Nation' (1915). (BNFC) Documentary (shown in three parts on British television) looking at the work of American film director D.W. Griffith, from his early work with Biograph, to the ground-breaking feature films BIRTH OF A NATION and INTOLERANCE, to his gradual eclipse in the 1920s.
