Im Zusammenhang mit der friedlichen Revolution in der DDR, der Öffnung der Berliner Mauer am 9. November 1989 und der knapp ein Jahr später erfolgten "deutschen Wiedervereinigung" macht eine junge Generation ostdeutscher Künstlerinnen und Künstler von sich reden, deren Arbeiten sich insbesondere durch eine unkonventionelle, teils radikale Ästhetik auszeichnen. Detlef Beck, Anke Feuchtenberger, Holger Fickelscherer und Henning Wagenbreth gründen 1989 in Berlin die Gruppe 'PGH Glühende Zukunft' und gestalten Plakate, Flugblätter, Comics und Illustrationen, die sich deutlich vom gleichzeitigen Schaffen junger westdeutscher Kolleginnen und Kollegen unterscheiden. Wichtige Anregungen für ihre durchaus freche Kunstproduktion verdanken sie dem Lehrer Volker Pfüller, dessen Vorbild auch im Werk von anderen Kunstlern wie ATAK (Georg Barber), einem der Mitbegründer der Berliner Underground-Comiczeitschrift 'Renate', seine Spuren hinterlassen hat. In den Jahren nach der Wende bringt die ostdeutsche Illustratorenszene immer wieder neue junge Talente hervor, wie Nadia Budde, Kat Menschik oder Thomas M. Müller. Heute lehren viele dieser zunächst als Comic- und Illustratoren-Avantgarde geschätzten Künstlerinnen und Künstler selbst an bedeutenden Hochschulen in Berlin, Hamburg oder Leipzig.
