Der Autor dieser Elsa-Brändström-Biografie steigt mit seiner Schilderung erst 1918, zum Zeitpunkt ihrer Verhaftung, in das Leben des "Engels von Sibirien" ein. Mithilfe eines in der Arrestzelle geschriebenen fiktiven Berichtes erfährt der Leser gerafft das bis dahin Geschehene. Ausführlich wird im Folgenden vom unerschrockenen Einsatz für die deutschen Kriegsgefangenen im Russland der Jahre 1915-20 berichtet, der sich fortsetzte im Aufbau zweier Sanatorien für Kriegsheimkerhrer und eines Kinderheims für Kriegswaisen mit eigens dafür in den USA gesammelten Geldern. Schließlich schildert Kruczek, wie sich Brändström nach der Emigration in die USA (anfängliche Sympathie für Teilaspekte des nationalsozialistischen Gedankenguts schlug um in Ablehnung) unermüdlich für andere deutsche Emigranten einsetzte.
