Der israelische Historiker (geboren 1933 in der Tschechoslowakei) wurde 1943 gemeinsam mit seiner Mutter aus Theresienstadt nach Auschwitz-Birkenau deportiert. Zusammen mit seinem Vater gelang ihm 1945 beim Todesmarsch die Flucht. Sein Buch basiert auf Tonbandaufnahmen aus den Jahren 1991-2001, ergänzt um Tagebuchaufzeichnungen von 2001-03. Kulka berichtet nicht chronologisch, sondern er erzählt von seinen Besuchen der schrecklichen Orte seiner Kindheit, den Gefühlen, die ihn dabei bewegten, schreibt von den Eindrücken des damals 10-Jährigen, der ins "Familienlager" nach Auschwitz kam und denkt als Erwachsener über das Kind, das er damals war, und dessen Erlebnisse nach. Er erinnert sich an Bilder, die sich in sein Gedächtnis eingebrannt haben, an Träume, die immer wiederkehren, an Begebenheiten, die er nicht vergessen kann. Sein sehr persönliches, eindrückliches Buch ist ein Nachdenken über die Vergangenheit und deren Wahrnehmung in der Gegenwart. Ergänzt wird der Band durch einen Aufsatz von Kulka über das "Familienlager" Auschwitz-Birkenau. (2) (Larissa Dämmig)
