Der einstündige Film Antigone (2018) ist Tacita Deans bislang komplexestes Werk. Im Namen verbindet sich die persönliche Geschichte der Künstlerin mit der griechischen Mythologie. Antigone ist die Heldin im gleichnamigen Drama des antiken Dichters Sophokles. Antigone heisst aber auch die ältere Schwester von Dean. Leitmotiv des Werks ist die Blindheit. Antigone kreist um grundlegende Fragen nach Vorhersehung und Bestimmung. Für den Film griff die Künstlerin tief in die Trickkiste aus der Frühzeit des Kinofilms. Sie holte Techniken wie Maskierungen und Mehrfachbelichtungen aus dem Schlaf der Vergessenheit. Die wie Collagen wirkenden Filmbilder montierte Dean mit und im Innern der Kamera mithilfe von raffinierten Schablonen und mehrfacher Belichtung. Das Ergebnis des experimentellen Projekts ist Pionierleistung und Meisterstück zugleich. Im Künstlerbuch erzählt sie anhand von zahlreichen Bildern und Texten, wie das Werk entstand und wie es wirkt. Es enthält Produktionsaufnahmen, Standfotografien, Zeichnungen der Künstlerin und vieles mehr. In einem Essay erzählt Dean von ihrer Faszination für den Namen und die Figur Antigone. Ein Transkript der im Film gesprochenen Worte ergänzt das Künstlerbuch. Antigone gehört zur Sammlung der Emanuel Hoffmann-Stiftung und wird im Kunstmuseum Basel | Gegenwart zum ersten Mal in der Schweiz präsentiert.
