Polen betreut ein schwieriges Erbe. Eine Vielzahl von Gedenkstätten erinnert an die Ermordung der europäischen Juden während der deutschen Besatzung. Ausgewählte Orte werden in diesem Band vorgestellt und diskutiert: Chełmno, Bełżec, Sobibór, Treblinka, Majdanek, Płaszów und Auschwitz repräsentieren verschiedene Phasen, Formen und Bedingungen der Shoah. Sie haben zudem eine individuelle Nachgeschichte und unterscheiden sich auch heute durch ein jeweils eigenes Erscheinungsbild. Der Band vermittelt einen Überblick über die Geschichte dieser Orte und fragt nach der Wechselbeziehung zwischen den historischen Ereignissen und der Gestaltung der Orte von 1943 bis heute. Ergänzt wird die Auseinandersetzung mit den Gedenkstätten durch übergreifende Texte, die etwa nach der Rolle der Fotografie in Ausstellungen, der Problematik des sprachlichen Umgangs mit der Shoah und der Würde von Opfern und Besuchern in Gestaltungskonzepten fragen.
