Im neuesten Roman des berühmten englischen Schriftstellers stehen der junge englische Autor Harry und Mamoon, ein älterer, mit Preisen ausgezeichneter Schriftsteller indischer Abstammung im Mittelpunkt, über den Harry eine Biografie schreiben soll. Diesen Auftrag erteilen der 70-jährige Mamoon, der sich am Ende seiner Kreativität wähnt, und seine momentane Frau Liana nur aus finanziellen Gründen. Als Harry auf dem Landsitz Mamoons weilt, erkennt er bald, dass der sich im Selbstmitleid windende Autor nur widerwillig Informationen aus seinem Leben preisgibt. Doch mit Unterstützung Lianas und der Haushaltshilfe Julia, mit der Harry, der eine Freundin in London hat, ein Verhältnis beginnt, nimmt die Biografie langsam Form an. Eine Satire über das Schriftstellerdasein und über Beziehungen. In den "Weisheiten" Mamoons, die neben den Intrigen eine grosse Rolle im Buch spielen, geht es nicht nur um Literatur und Philosophie, sondern auch um Sex. Insgesamt sind die vielen Dialoge zum Teil etwas ermüdend
