Aus Anlass des 100. Jubiläums der Gründung der Universität Hamburg hielt die Kurt Hiller Gesellschaft im Juni 2019 ihre Jahrestagung in Zusammenarbeit mit der vor Ort ansässigen Arbeitsstelle für Universitätsgeschichte im Hauptgebäude der Universität Hamburg ab. Fachwissenschaftler und Zeitzeugen begegneten sich hier. Formell war Kurt Hiller (1885-1972) nie an diese Universität angebunden. Nach seiner Rückkehr aus dem Exil (1955) und Übersiedelung nach Hamburg fand der schon Siebzigjährige Philosoph, Literat und Zeitkritiker im Umfeld der Universität Hamburg – vor allem unter jungen Studenten – ein nachhaltiges Wirkungsfeld. Er hielt Vorträge, schrieb für neu gegründete Studenten-Zeitschriften ('Studenten-Kurier'/später 'konkret', 'Lynx'), trat als Zeitzeuge in Seminaren auf und wurde zu politischen Diskussionen eingeladen. Im Vorfeld der 1968er fand der Exilrückkehrer hier seine „Öffentlichkeit“. Und mancher Opponent zum (Nachkriegs-)Zeitgeist fand in dem ehemaligen 'Weltbühne'-Mitarbeiter einen Bezug zu verschütteten Traditionen der Vor-1933-Zeit. Der Band enthält Beiträge der Tagung, die durch weitere Studien und bisher kaum bekannte Texte Hillers ergänzt werden.
