Die Anwendung von Ultraschall ("US) hat sowohl für die zerstörungsfreie Werkstoffprüfung /1/ als auch für die wissenschaftliche Forschung /2/ allergrößte Bedeutung gefunden. Nicht zuletzt zeigt sich dies an der stetigen Zunahme der Publikationsrate auf diesem Gebiet. Bisherige Hauptanwendungen des Ultraschalls in der Werkstoffprüfung sind die Gebiete der Fehlersuche und der Dickenmessung in der Fertigungskontrolle. Hierbei wird der in das Werkstück übertragene Ultraschallpuls als Sonde benutzt, um aus anomal auftretenden Echos auf vorliegende Werkstückfehler (z.B. Einschlüsse, Poren, Risse) zu schließen oder um mit Hilfe der Laufzeitmessung des normalen Rückwandechos die Dickenabmessung des Produktes kontinuierlich während der Fertigung zu überwachen. Die Laufzeitmessung spricht empfindlich auf mehr oder weniger makroskopische Eigenschaften oder Veränderungen des Werkstoffs an; sie ist jedoch relativ unempfindlich im Hinblick auf seine mikrostrukturellen Eigenschaften, z.B. Korngefüge oder Versetzungsstruktur. Hier erlangt nun die Messung der US-Absorption*) zunehmend Aufmerksamkeit. Bei Absorptionsmessungen tritt allerdings eine Schwierigkeit auf, die der bei den Laufzeitmessungen gerade entgegengesetzt ist: Die Absorption reagiert extrem empfindlich auf eine Vielzahl von meist nebeneinander vorliegenden Materialeigenschaften
