Warum sich mit Herder (1744-1803) beschäftigen, fragt sich die Autorin, selbst promovierte Theologin. Weil er Ideen angestossen hat, Anregungen entwickelt hat, in einem Zeitumbruch, in der "chaotischen" Zeit um 1800, an deren Ende wir heute stehen. In ihrer Lebensbeschreibung kommen auch seine Freunde, Feinde, seine Familie und sein umfangreiches Werk (Dichtung, Philosophie, Theologie, Briefe) zu ihrem Recht. Natürlich wird der Weimarer Zeit - er hat bis zu seinem Tode dort 27 Jahre als Generalsuperintendent gelebt - und der Freundschaft und Entfremdung zu Goethe viel Aufmerksamkeit gewidmet. Aber auch die davor liegenden Stationen seines Lebens: Morungen, Königsberg, wo er Kants Schüler war, dem er später in "Ideen zur Philosophie der Geschichte der Menschheit" widersprechen wird, das 1. Amt in Riga, Strassburg, Bückeburg werden dargestellt. Die Autorin schreibt sehr lesbar, angenehm verständlich. Die Illustrationen sind gut ausgesucht, eine Zeittafel ist dem Leser hilfreich. Der "Spaziergang durch Weimar auf den Spuren J.G. Herders" am Ende des Buches bringt selbst Weimarkennern noch Neues
