Die drei haben einst im Himmel Missfallen erregt und wurden auf die Erde verbannt, um sich dort zu bewähren. Diese Geschichte um die beliebten chinesischen Legenden und Mythen kennt in ihrem Ursprungsland jedes Kind, doch wurde der Roman noch nie vollständig ins Deutsche übersetzt. Dieses Werk der chinesischen Literatur ist nicht nur in China, sondern auch in seinen Nachbarländern ungeheuer populär und wird dank zahlreicher Verfilmungen auch bei uns immer bekannter und prägt das chinesische Weltbild; zur Zeit plant der chinesische Erfolgsproduzent Zhang Jizhong eine Verfilmung als Trilogie in Zusammenarbeit mit James Cameron.
