Die vorliegende Arbeit untersucht am Beispiel Niedersachsens, wie der öffentlich geförderte soziale Wohnungsbau nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg konzipiert war und wie er sich in den Jahren von 1946 bis 1960 im Land entwickelte. Kennzeichnend für das 1946 gegründete Bundesland war eine durch Kriegszerstörungen und umfangreiche Bevölkerungszuwanderungen bedingte dramatische Wohnungsnot. Die Verringerung des Wohnungsdefizites stellte bis in die 1960er Jahre hinein eine der wesentlichen Herausforderungen für die niedersächsische Gesellschaft dar. Wie dem Wohnungsproblem begegnet wurde, wird in diesem Buch unter anderem durch den Blick auf die Förderung unterschiedlicher Zielgruppen nachgezeichnet. Ein besonderes Augenmerk gilt den überdurchschnittlich hohen Förderquoten von Eigenheimen und Kleinsiedlungen.
