Die Studie behandelt das für die Politische Philosophie des Aristoteles zentrale Motiv der Bezugnahme auf Natur und natürliche Gegebenheiten am Beispiel der Aussagen zur Sklaverei. Die in diesem Zusammenhang behauptete Ungleichheit unter den Menschen – die Konzeption einer Sklavennatur – scheint im Widerspruch zu zentralen Lehrstücken von Aristoteles’ allgemeiner Anthropologie zu stehen, insbesondere zu der These von der Vernunftbegabung des Menschen, zu seinem Streben nach Eudaimonia, das sich gerade in der Betätigung der Vernunft erfüllt, und zu der Bestimmung des Menschen als politisches Lebewesen. Unterbreitet wird ein Vorschlag, wie dieser Widerspruch aufgelöst werden kann: Die Menschennatur birgt eine Variationsbreite möglicher Realisierungen. Sie umspannt die Extreme der Orientierung am Logos einerseits und des Lebens nach angeborenen Instinkten andererseits und weist ein großes Spektrum auf, das vom Animalischen zum Göttlichen reicht. Dabei können Handwerker und arbeitende Freie durchaus hinter Sklaven zurückfallen, wie einzelne ,Barbaren‘ zu Philosophen aufzusteigen vermögen
