De nombreuses expositions « vides» ont été réalisées depuis celles d'Yves Klein jusqu'à la rétrospective de neuf expositions « vides » au Centre Georges Pompidou et à la Kunsthalle de Berne en 2009. Ces expositions relèvent d'un dispositif construit autour d'une rhétorique du vide articulée par les critiques, puis les commissaires, qui ne correspond que très rarement aux propos des artistes. Leurs modes d'existence propre, leurs spécificités - la disparition apparente de la proposition artistique, l'autorétlexivité de l'exposition, la surexposition des lieux, le décept du visiteur - nous ont conduit à analyser l'évolution de leur marque fonctionnelle. Les expositions « vides» s'accordent avec les valeurs d'une économie tertiaire. Elles participent aux notions de notoriété, de réputation, typiques de ce que l'on nomme l'image de marque et plus largement d'une économie de l'attention, une source rare, qu'il faut savoir capter. L'exposition « vide » apparaît comme un méta-dispositif de représentations et de communication pour l'institution qui se fonde sur un jeu de transparences et d'opacités mettant en avant de nouvelles politiques représentationnelles. Sa muséalisation s'affirme d'ailleurs au moment où est identifié un nouvel institutionnalisme. En associant modalités de perception des œuvres et valeurs institutionnelles, l'institution participe plus que jamais des pratiques curatoriales. Elle donne aussi tacitement aux commissaires un nouveau programme: celui de valoriser l'institution. Derrière un art qui semble constitutif d'une dématérialisation des constituants de l'expérience esthétique se fait jour une esthétisation de l'institution et de son organisation
