This dissertation unfolds how exhibitions were thought of and experimented by several Russian artists including Mikhail Larionov, Kazimir Malevich, and Vladimir Tatlin. My study of eight eventlike group exhibitions held in Moscow and Petrograd between 1910 and 1916 (The Knave of Diamonds, The Donkey's Tail, The Target, M4, Tramway V, The Year 1915, The Last Futurist Exhibition of Pictures 0,10, and The Store) demonstrates that thinking of exhibitions was a major axis in the avant-garde Utopias of a free and efficient art. In opposition to the autonomist interpretations of modern art, I borrow the methods of social art history to underscore the importance of public space for modern art Utopias. Accordingly, this thesis calls for further theoretical attention to exhibitions in modern art studies. First-time French translations of several Russian texts on exhibitions ranging from 1900 to 1923, as well as samples of the critical coverage of every case study complete this project
