Mit "Haonan haonu" schliesst Hou Hsiao-hsien nach "Stadt der Trauer" und "Der Puppenspieler" seine historische Trilogie, die der 1947 in Meixan auf dem chinesischen Festland geborene Filmemacher über China gestaltet hat... Es sind im wesentlichen drei auch farblich unterschiedliche Erzählstränge, die der Filmemacher nach einem Drehbuch der Schriftstellerin Chu Tien-wen bündelt: Im ersten schildert er eine Reise in den Widerstand gegen die japanischen Besatzer anfangs der 40er Jahre...In einem zweiten Erzählstrang verknüpft Hou diese Vergangenheit mit der Gegenwart, indem er eine junge Frau ins Zentrum rückt, die in einem Filmprojekt eine Widerstandskämpferin von damals verkörpert. Die beiden Zeiten sind damit parallel gesetzt und ihrerseits durchbrochen von einer dritten Ebene: Die der jüngeren Vorgeschichte, in der die Schauspielerin eine Liebschaft mit einem Drogen-Kriminellen hatte, der im Bandenkrieg ums Leben kam. Gemeinsam ist den Zeiten, dass Frauen wie Männer sich für eine Sache engagieren. Verschieden ist der Inhalt ihres Engagements. War es damals die Gruppe, die loszog, für ein kollektives Ideal zu kämpfen, so setzt heute das Individuum sein Leben für materielles Glück und Macht im Kampf ums Geld aufs Spiel; wurden die Freiheitskämfenden damals eingesperrt im Gefängnis, so sind die vermeintlich Befreiten heute mit ihren eigenen Problemen, ihren privaten Geschichten gefangen.
