Seit 2002 untersucht die Leipziger Arbeitsgruppe um Brähler und Decker die rechtsextreme Einstellung in Deutschland. Die gewonnenen Daten und sozialpsychologischen Analysen der »Mitte«-Studien der Universität Leipzig sind zur bundesweiten Grundlage der Auseinandersetzung mit Rechtsextremismus geworden. Die rechtsextreme Einstellung ist kein Randphänomen. Insbesondere autoritäre Aggressionen gegen MigrantInnen sind weit verbreitet. Die globale Wanderungsbewegung stellt die Bundesrepublik deshalb zunehmend vor besondere Herausforderungen. Die aktuellen Ergebnisse zeigen, dass antidemokratische Ideologien seit einigen Jahren verstärkt artikuliert werden und sich das politische Klima in der Bundesrepublik verschiebt. Im Langzeitverlauf lassen sich so verschiedene politische Milieus, ihre Polarisierung und der Legitimationsverlust demokratischer Institutionen beschreiben.
