When pregnant journalist Maria Vargas travels to war-torn Illyria to interview the wife of the country's dictator, she is unaware of the depths of oppression, violence and control that await. With her translator assassinated upon their arrival, Maria is bundled into a refuge in the woods. As the history of this apparent 'safe house' is unravelled, the sinister underbelly of Illyria is fully revealed. Bryony Lavery's 'Illyria' was first performed in the Cottesloe auditorium of the National Theatre, London, by the A11 Project, Bristol, as part of the Connections season in July 2002
