Eine New Yorkerin fällt nach der Ermordung ihres Mannes der Trunksucht anheim und verliert das Sorgerecht für ihren Sohn. Als die Pflegeeltern signalisieren, sie könne das Kind für eine halbe Million Dollar zurückkaufen, geht sie auf das Angebot eines sterbenskranken Schriftstellers ein, der ihr eine Million bietet, wenn sie seinen geistig behinderten Sohn heiratet und fünf Jahre lang bei ihm bleibt. Fortan lebt sie in der Sorge um zwei "Kinder" und kümmert sich aufopfernd um ihren behinderten Mann. Kurz vor Ablauf der Fünf-Jahres-Frist wird sie von ihrer Vergangenheit eingeholt. Düster gezeichnetes Frauenschicksal als Abschluss einer Trilogie über Frauen in New York, in dem Amos Kollek ein wenig Licht in sein düsteres Weltbild bringt.
