Der Erstautor ist ein sehr bekannter Paläanthropologe, der durch aufsehenerregende Funde in Ostafrika wesentlich zur Aufklärung der Abstammung des Menschen beigetragen hat, ähnlich wie seine Eltern Louis und Mary Leakey. Die Leakey-Familie steht in einem gewissen Gegensatz zu Johanson, der ähnlich wichtige Funde in Äthiopien gemacht hat (vgl. Johanson: "Lucy", zuletzt BA 8/90). Doch diese Gegensätze betreffen nicht den Kern der Frage nach dem Ursprung des Menschen, dem Leakey hier sehr ausführlich nachgeht. Es werden nicht nur Knochenfunde behandelt, auch Sozialverhalten (verglichen mit dem von Schimpansen), Sprache, Religion, Beziehung zum Tode usw. Geschickt geschrieben und gut lesbar.
