Der kleine Angestellte Josef K. wird eines Tages unter die Aufsicht einer obskuren Justizbehörde gestellt. Sein Prozess schleppt sich dahin, ohne daß der Angeklagte über Sitz, Funktion und Absicht des Gerichts Genaueres erfährt. Versuche, über Frauenbekanntschaften und Mittelspersonen zum Ziel zu kommen, scheitern. Am Ende wird K. von den übermächtigen Instanzen hingerichtet. Kafkas "Prozeß" in einer Filmfassung von Orson Welles, der die Vorlage zu einem düster-expressionistischen Kinoalptraum verdichtet. Die Inszenierung fesselt durch ihre optische Brillanz und durch virtuos verfremdete Schauplätze, wird in ihrem barocken Reichtum an Effekten aber kaum der strengen, beherrschten Erzählweise des Romans gerecht. Der "Autor" Welles ist immer präsent und liefert eine sehr persönliche Kafka-Interpretation. (Lexikon des internationalen Films)
