Im ersten Teil seiner Rache-Trilogie entwirft der Koreaner Park Chan Woo ein zermürbendes Szenario: Ein taubstummer, elternloser Mann hat Mühe, sich und seine kranke Schwester zu ernähren, die ohne neue Niere nicht mehr lange leben wird. Da der Weg zu einer Spenderniere mühsam ist, lässt sich das Leid höchstens über den illegalen Organmarkt abkürzen. Doch die Händler spielen falsch, der Mann erwacht ohne Geld, Niere und die Hoffnung auf Rettung seiner Schwester. Das Unglücksszenario spitzt sich immer weiter zu, bis sich der Mann rächt. Angesichts der nicht enden wollenden Schicksalsschläge bleibt, trotz des eindrücklichen Spiel der Darsteller und des neorealistischen Inszenierungswillens des Regisseurs, ein berechnender Geschmack nach Kunstgewerbe, den man bei "Oldboy", dem zweiten Teil der "Trilogie", nicht mehr spürt. Möglicherweise ist "Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance" nur eine Fingerübung auf dem Weg zum Opus magnum: dem Abschluss der Trilogie mit "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance" (2005).
