Pour mieux comprendre ce que cette peinture a de profondément neuf, il faut revenir sur les lieux de son apparition, interroger les hommes et les femmes qui permirent à Monet d'accomplir sa rupture historique. Trente années décisives séparent 1845, époque où la famille Monet s'installe au Havre, et 1874, date de la première exposition impressionniste à Paris. Le jeune homme, né en 1840, effectue aux portes de l'Océan ses premiers pas artistiques, à une époque elle-même bouleversée par l'essor de la photographie et les attentes d'une nouvelle clientèle. Dans le sillage de Courbet, Boudin, Jongkind, Daubigny, qu'il fréquente tour à tour, le jeune peintre observe et trouve sa voie. À partir de 1859,il se partage entre la Normandie et Paris, où il approfondit sa formation artistique auprès des futurs impressionnistes. C'est le temps des grandes marines exécutées dans le port, des paysages où s'élabore le vocabulaire de la jeune peinture, des premiers chefs-d'oeuvre, La Terrasse à Sainte-Adresse, Impression, soleil levant. Ce livre, pour la première fois, articule les prémisses d'une révolution en peinture aux richesses d'un pays dont le territoire a pour coeur Le Havre. Une équipe de chercheurs internationaux, réunis par Géraldine Lefebvre, fait le point sur ces années décisives. Documents inédits à l'appui, ils passent au crible le milieu familial, la vie havraise et son incidence sur Monet, les conditions de sa première formation artistique, les sites peints, les influences à l'oeuvre dans la peinture du jeune artiste, l'évolution de sa technique, les premiers mécènes.
