Fünfzig Strassen und Plätze erzählen von der Geschichte der Stadt Rom von der Gründung bis zur Moderne. Rezension: Roms 2.000-jährige Geschichte wird hier punktuell beleuchtet, indem die Althistorikerin Van Dijk mit dem Leser zu 50 Strassen, Winkeln, Gässchen und Plätzen spaziert und jeweils auf 2 bis 3 Seiten über die Ereignisse, die sich an diesen geschichtsträchtigen Orten abgespielt haben, berichtet. Aufgrund archäologischer und literarischer Quellen und Anekdoten erzählt sie von der Gründung Roms bis in die Moderne, über Richtstätten, Filmstätten, Massaker, Kunst, Plätze, Brunnen, Stolpersteine ... Bekannte Geschichte bekommt oft noch eine unbekannte Anekdote, weniger bekannte Orte werden historisch erschlossen. Die Beschreibungen sind sachlich, aber gut verständlich auch ohne Vorwissen. Der Schwerpunkt liegt allerdings eher im Altertum und Mittelalter, die Moderne kommt ein bisschen zu kurz, dennoch ein guter pointierten Überblick über die Geschichte der Stadt, obwohl es keine Abbildungen gibt. Lediglich im Anhang fünf thematisch ausgewählte Stadtspaziergänge anhand der dazu ausgewählten Kapitel und jeweils Karten dazu. In jedem Fall als Reisehandbuch gut einsetzbar. (2-3)
