Die Entwicklung des Bauwesens hat analog der auch sonst in Wissenschaft und Technik erkennbaren Tendenz zu einer fortschreitenden Spezialisierung geführt. Daher wird der schaffende Baufachmann, sei er Architekt oder Ingenieur, immer mehr in seiner Tätigkeit beengt und von der Beschäftigung mit Nachbargebieten abgedrängt. Hieraus resultiert vielfach eine gewisse Schwerfälligkeit in der Anpassung und Einordnung in ein gemeinschaftliches Schaffen. Der Fabrikbauer ist in der glücklichen Lage, eine gewisse Sonderstellung einzunehmen; obschon seine Wissenschaft im Kern aus dem allgemeinen Bauwesen gewachsen ist, ist doch der Fabrikbau eine eigene Spezialtätigkeit erst durch die Angliederung und Einordnung vieler Elemente der Nachbargebiete geworden. Diese Entwicklung hat sich nur langsam und unbeobachtet vollzogen, so daß auch eine umfassende, dem heutigen Stande der Technik entsprechende Literatur für das Gebiet des Fabrikbaues noch nicht entstanden ist. Wohl wird in vielen Einzelarbeiten, meist im Rahmen anderer Gebiete, zahlreiches Material, das für den Fabrikbauer von großer Wichtigkeit ist, bearbeitet, doch fehlt es an einer zusammenfassenden Betrachtung, die dem projektierenden und ausführenden Fachmann konkrete, zahlenmäßige und zeichnerische Unterlagen für seine vielseitige Tätigkeit liefert und diese Unterlagen auch besonders auf die Bedürfnisse des Fabrikbaues, unter Ausschaltung alles hierfür Unwesentlichen, zuschneidet. Aus diesem in ihrer eigenen Praxis empfundenen Mangel erhielten die Verfasser die Anregung zu der vorliegenden Arbeit, die keineswegs den Anspruch macht, neue wissenschaftliche oder technische Erkenntnisse zu vermitteln
