Der Autor, Experte für die Geschichte der Ritterorden, schildert in chronologisch angelegten, detailgenauen Schritten die Templeraffäre in Frankreich - Ereignisse, Hintergründe, Verfahren, Protagonisten - vom Beginn der Verfolgung 1307 bis zur Aufhebung des Ordens 1312. Rezension: Der Templerorden wurde "aufgehoben, aber nicht verurteilt" (S. 280). Demurger, einer der besten Kenner der Templergeschichte (vgl. 1992, 2015), geht in engen, der Chronologie folgenden Schritten den Ereignissen nach, die nach über 5-jährigem Ringen zwischen Papst und König 1312 aus eher pragmatischen Gründen zur Aufhebung des Ordens durch Clemens V. führten. Dabei setzt er einige gegenüber früheren (auch eigenen) Darstellungen neue Akzente: etwa was die Schuldfrage (zugunsten der Templer), die Rolle des Papstes, den Widerstand der Templer betrifft. Es entsteht aufgrund der reichen, aber unvollständigen und einseitigen Quellenlage ein vielschichtiges Bild, das durch Hypothesen und Einblicke in den Fachdiskurs abgerundet wird. Der übersichtlich gegliederte Band wird durch Karten, Übersichten und einen umfangreichen Anhang (u.a. Anklagepunkte, Listen der bei unterschiedlichen Anlässen beteiligten Templer, Bibliografie, Register) ergänzt. Alternativ, in gröe︢ren Beständen auch ergänzend zu M.
