Zwei Jahre lang fuhr Agnès Varda, eine der Schlüsselfiguren der französischen Nouvelle Vague, an fremden Flüssen entlang, sah Mandelbaumpflegern in Copacabana beim Ästebeschneiden zu, erkundete vergessene Orte wie die Watts Towers in Los Angeles und besuchte Künstler, die sich auf einer verlassenen Terrasse in Sankt Petersburg niederließen. Aus ihren Beobachtungen schuf die Regisseurin ein ganz persönliches filmisches Reisetagebuch. Entlang fremder Flüsse zu beinahe vergessenen Orten und sehr speziellen Menschen reiste die aus Belgien Filmemacherin Agnès Varda. Aus ihren mit der Kamera festgehaltenen Beobachtungen und Eindrücken entstand eine Reihe kurzer, dokumentarischer Reiseberichte. Um die Lebensart und die zeitgenössische Kunstszene an ihren jeweiligen Reisezielen authentisch einzufangen, besucht die Regisseurin in zahlreichen Ländern der Welt Museen, Ausstellungen und Biennalen. Dort spricht sie mit vielen Künstlern, unter anderem mit Pierre Soulages, Christian Boltanski, Annette Messager, Mique Barceló, Pierrick Sorin, dem Lyoner Knopf- und Konzeptkünstler Michel Jeannès alias Monsieur Bouton und der Illustratorin Kiki Crèvecoeur aus Brüssel. Ihr mit der Handkamera aufgenommenes Bildmaterial schnitt und kommentierte Agnès Varda selbst und fügte es zu einem kohärenten Filmensemble zusammen. Dabei entstand ein kreativer, kluger Film voller Humor. (Arte)
