Ihren Vaterkomplex räumt sie gleich zu Beginn des Buches ein, die Autorin. Selbst erfolgreiche und vielfach preisgekrönte Schriftstellerin, nimmt sich Liebmann der Lebensgeschichte ihres Vaters, Rudolf Herrnstadt, an. Dafür erhielt sie 2008 den Sachbuchpreis der Leipziger Buchmesse. Herrnstadt hatte vor allem in der DDR einen Namen; "die Zeithistoriker werden Liebmanns Buch noch zu entdecken haben", urteilt "Focus". Herrnstadt war patriotischer Kommunist, er arbeitete während der Nazizeit als Spion für die Sowjetunion, erlangte Ansehen als Journalist, war Gründer der "Berliner Zeitung", Chefredakteur des "Neuen Deutschland", Mitglied im Zentralkomitee der SED - und schließlich von Walter Ulbricht mitverantwortlich gemacht für den Volksaufstand in der DDR am 17. Juni 1953. Er wurde ausgeschaltet und durfte nicht mehr publizieren. Liebmann zitiert aus seinen Briefen, Aufzeichnungen und Artikeln, führte Interviews mit Zeitzeugen und ist sich hie und da für Spekulationen nicht zu schade. Es gibt wortwörtlich viele Fragezeichen in dem Buch. Liebmann kommt zum Fazit: "Sie haben dich angeschissen, Papa." (2)
