Hier begegnet uns wieder Scarlet, das Mädchen mit dem eigenwilligen Namen, den es sich selbst gab. Anders als in dem vorangegangenen Band "Scarlet und die Eifersucht", begleiten wir das Mädchen, das nun kein Kind mehr ist, auf ihrem Weg zum Theater. Scarlet möchte Schauspielerin werden. Die Geschichte ist in Briefen erzählt, die Scarlet an die geliebte Freundin Minne schreibt. Sie berichtet von alltäglichen Erlebnissen, von ihrem Schauspielunterricht und dem Heldenvater, der ihre schauspielerische Entwicklung behutsam lenkt, sie erzählt vom Sandmann, ihrem Kameraden am Konservatorium und seinen Freunden. Vor allem aber vertraut sie der Freundin die für sie so wichtige Begegnung mit Fundevogel an. Der versponnene Zauber dieser Geschichte liegt vor allem in diesem entzückenden, wenn auch ein wenig wehmütigen Erlebnis der ersten Liebe. Scarlet, immer auf der Suche nach einem Menschen, der ausschließlich ihr gehört, erfährt nach einer bitteren Trennung, daß nur die Mühen, Glück und die Enttäuschung auf dem Lebensweg ihr gehören, und daß sie nur durch ihre Arbeit sich selbst gewinnt.
