In "Kriegsroman" zieht eine Gruppe finnischer Soldaten 1941 in den Krieg gegen die Sowjetunion. Realistisch schildert Linna das Kämpfen, Leben und Sterben seiner Protagonisten. Er zeichnet unnachahmliche Typen, die mit losem Mundwerk, derben Sprüchen und einer gehörigen Portion Galgenhumor das Geschehen lebendig machen. Das zu den meistverkauften Büchern Finnlands gehörende "Tuntematon sotilas" von Väinö Linna (1954 WSOY, Helsinki) wurde bisher zweimal ins Deutsche übersetzt: 1955 als "Kreuze in Karelien" (Kiepenhauer und Witsch) und 1971 als "Der unbekannte Soldat" (DDR). 1954 wurde der finnische Text von der Zensur gekürzt und erst im Jahr 2000 erschien bei WSOY die ungekürzte Ausgabe mit dem Titel "Sotaromaani" (Kriegsroman). Erstmals liegt hier nun die deutsche Übersetzung der unzensierten Version des Romans vor. Alfred Otto Schwedes Übersetzung aus dem Jahr 1971 wurde neu durchgesehen. Die neuen, sehr umfangreichen, zensierten Passagen wurden von Angela Plöger übersetzt. (Verlagstext)
