Lukas Held rekonstruiert in seinem Buch, wie die Frage nach dem Wesen des menschlichen Antriebs seit den 1870er Jahren zum Gegenstand psychologischer Forschung wurde, nachdem sie bis dahin Thema von Philosophen, Theologen und Physiologen gewesen war. Wie verwandelte sich der Wille von einem Vermögen, das man hat, zu einer Fähigkeit, die sich regulieren lässt? Und wie wurde damit jene Selbststeuerung möglich, zu deren Training das moderne Subjekt unablässig angehalten ist? Antworten auf diese Fragen führen zu einer Neukonzeption der menschlichen Natur, mit der sich ebenso neuartige Vorstellungen von Politik und Gesellschaft Bahn brechen. Im Zentrum der Analyse stehen sowohl die psychologische Wissensproduktion als auch deren Mobilisierung für politische Zwecke in der westdeutschen Bildungs- und der amerikanischen Entwicklungspolitik. Das provokante Argument der Studie lautet, dass es beim Aufstieg der Motivationspsychologie um die Etablierung von Strukturen der Ungleichheit und des Wettbewerbs ging, die das individuelle Handeln im Namen von "Chancengerechtigkeit", "Selbstverwirklichung" und "Lebenserfolg" auf wirtschaftliches Wachstum ausrichteten. Angst und Antrieb leistet damit auch einen Beitrag zur Geschichte des Neoliberalismus, dessen Siegeszug bislang vor allem als Durchbruch ökonomischer Ideen beschrieben worden ist.
