Rosa von Praunheim porträtiert den bekannten Transvestiten aus der ehemaligen DDR Charlotte von Mahlsdorf in einer gelungenen Mischung aus Dokumentar- und Spielfilm. Charlottes Mutter ist schwach und anlehnungsbedürftig, die lesbische Tante ist die Einzige, die Charlotte Verständnis entgegenbringt. Als Charlotte, vom Vater gedemütigt und gequält, keinen anderen Ausweg mehr weiß, bringt sie ihn um. Charlotte übersteht trotz alledem unversehrt die Wirren des Krieges und lebt ihr Leben. Sie errichtet ihr eigenes Museum, das einzige Privatmuseum in der ehemaligen DDR und kämpft weiter um die Verwirklichung ihrer Träume und Vorstellungen Ń in Faltenrock und Kittelschürze. 1992 erhält sie eine der höchsten Auszeichnungen Deutschlands, das Bundesverdienstkreuz am Bande. Rosa von Praunheim erzählt mit diesem Dokumentar-Spielfilm die fast unglaubliche Lebensgeschichte eines warmherzigen, sanftmütigen Menschens, einer couragierten Außenseiterin, einer ewigen Kämpferin. Charlotte von Mahlsdorf, geb. 1928 als Lothar Berfelde, wächst während des Nationalsozialismus unter einem tyrannischen und gewalttätigen Vater auf, der Charlotte zu einem echten Soldaten machen will.
