"At the end of the 19th century Havana was a city practically halted in time..." That is how the text of this volume begins, dedicated to remember events and images of the Cuban capital during the first decades of the Republic, particularly the Vedado barrio from its rise and inevitable fall as a space preferred by the high class for permanence and leisure. Many events made the first lines of the text change in the scenario. One was the rapid growth of the population, above all, "from those more fortunate sectors that required new spaces to legitimize themselves". By 1918 El Vedado was the most exclusive barrio in the capital. The text by Dr. Llilian Llanes is a unique lesson in history: of a nation, of a city, of the different hierarchies and classes. She moves along architectural styles, its maturity throughout time, intervention of Master workers and prominent architectural companies. She explores in depth the residences of prominent figures of the Republic: generals and doctors that, as in the novel by Carlos Loveira, capture a lead role. The reader will have the opportunity of seeing recovered images from the archives and publications of the era such as El Figaro y Social, barely reproduced for posterity. It is not only photographs of buildings, their facades and interiors but also portraits, caricatures, publicity advertisement that centers for those who travel through these pages, the environment and dynamism of an era. As a complement to this story there is a contemporary vision... We discover other angles of that very same Havana, a century later, through the lens of Pedro Abascal. Is this city still halted in time?"--Page 4 of cover
