Etwa 10 Prozent der deutschen Bevölkerung zwischen 16 und 40 Jahren trägt mindestens eine Tätowierung. Tobias Lobstädt untersucht die Bedeutung des Selbstwertgefühls und seiner narzisstischen Erhaltungsmechanismen. Beschrieben werden körperliche Gestaltungstechniken des Selbst, die sich auf den urbanen Bühnen und im Spiegel des Gegenübers abzeichnen oder durch internalisierte Objekte zur Selbstreflexion werden. Der Autor erarbeitet, in welcher Weise sich diese Verfahren auf der sozialen Körperoberfläche abzeichnen und welche psychischen Funktionen Tätowierungen für ihre TrägerInnen erfüllen. Die Thesen prüft er in über 20 Interviews mit jungen Erwachsenen und wertet sie durch die dokumentarische Methode aus. Eine Medienanalyse der letzten 10 Jahre ergänzt und beschreibt eine jugendkulturelle Ausdrucksform, die für die Nachmoderne kennzeichnend ist.
