Statt abstrakt politische sind es bei Abdulrazak Gurnah konkret persönliche Situationen, in denen die Möglichkeiten und Bedingungen des internationalen Zusammenlebens ausgehandelt werden. Geboren in Sansibar als Sohn eines aus Jemen kommenden Geschäftsmannes, exilierte Gurnah 1967 mit seinem Bruder nach Großbritannien und jobbte dort zunächst als Krankenpfleger. Er studierte englische Literaturwissenschaften an der Canterbury Christ Church University und promovierte an der University of Kent. Er war Dozent an der Bayero University in Kano, Nigeria und anschließend Professor für englische und postkoloniale Literaturen an der University of Kent. Gurnahs Internationalität zeigt sich schon formal in seiner Literatur. Er setzt seine Romane in Bezug zu Klassikern der europäischen und US-amerikanischen Literaturen, integriert Geschichten und Legenden der Suaheli-Kultur und folgt mit dem Modell des Erzählreigens einem Prinzip arabischer Literaturen. Hinzu kommt als Wesen der Oralität, dass ähnlich klingende Ereignisse immer wieder aus verschiedenen Perspektiven erzählt, ergänzt oder variiert werden. Dieses transformative Element in Gurnahs Romanen, die damit verschiedene Erzähltraditionen und Diskurslinien überbrücken, ist das hervorstechendste Merkmal des literarischen Schreibens des Literatur-Nobelpreisträgers.
