Der 5. Band der in einer unbestimmten Zukunft spielenden Weltraum-Serie mit dem kleinen Major Tom (vgl. Band 4: "Kometengefahr", Band 6). Tom und Freundin Stella samt Roboterkatze Plutinchen leben allein und etwas gelangweilt auf der Raumstation Space Camp 1, als sie den Auftrag erhalten, den Mars zu besuchen. Dort baut Toms Vater gerade eine Marsstation auf. Allerdings sollen Tom und Stella an einem gefährlichen Experiment teilnehmen: Um die Reisezeit zu verkürzen, sollen sie als 1. durch ein sogenanntes "Wurmloch" fliegen. Fast stossen sie mit einem Asteroid zusammen, doch dann landen sie wohlbehalten auf dem Mars. Am nächsten Tag können Tom und Stella erste Ausflüge in der Station und auf dem Mars unternehmen.
