Kurzer Dokumentarfilm von Luis Buñuel über die Menschen in einem spanischen Landstrich zwischen Cáceres und Salamanca, der "Las Hurdes" genannt wird. In der einsamen Berggegend, in die einst die spanischen Juden vor der Inquisition geflohen waren, gibt es nichts außer Felsen, Heidekraut und Ziegen. Die Menschen, die hier leben, sind bitterarm. Es gibt kaum Arbeit. So verläßt die Gegend, wer arbeiten kann. Zurück bleiben die Kranken, die Kinder, die Behinderten, die Alten. Der Film dokumentiert ihr Elend lakonisch in kurzen Episoden und Bildern. Da ihm jede pädagogische Absicht fremd ist, er also keine Hilfe oder Änderung verspricht, verstört er die Zuschauer noch Jahrzehnte nach seiner Uraufführung im Jahr 1931. Finanziert wurde der Film vom spanischen Anarchisten Ramón Acin, der 1936 von Faschisten erschossen wurde. (Lexikon des internationalen Films)
