Diogo do Couto (1542-1616) foi um dos escritores mais prolíferos da sua época. Mais conhecido como autor de nove Décadas da Ásia, cobrindo cerca de 75 anos da história do império português oriental (1526-1600), ganhou ainda notoriedade como escritor político de intervenção, enquanto autor de dois diálogos protagonizados por um «soldado prático», verdadeiros libelos acusatórios dos desmandos do império asiático português. Foi ainda autor de peças de oratória, tratadista, biógrafo, narrador de naufrágios, e epistológrafo, tendo sido provavelmente um dos primeiros comentadores de Os Lusíadas. Como primeiro guarda-mor do tombo de Goa, teve a seu cargo a organização deste arquivo do Estado português da Índia. A circunstância de se terem cumprido 400 anos sobre a morte de Diogo do Couto, ocorrida em Goa a 10 de dezembro de 1616, foi pretexto para a reunião de um conjunto de estudos sobre este autor e a sua obra.
