Content: Core and log measurements provide crucial information about subsurface formations. Their usage, either for integration or calibration, is complicated by the different measurement methods employed, different volumes of formation analysed, and in turn, the heterogeneity of the formations. While the problems of comparing core and log data are only too well known, the way in which these data can be most efficiently combined is not at all clear in most cases. In recent years there has been increased interest in this problem both in industry and academia, due in part to developments in technology which offer access to new types of information, and in the case of industry, pressure for improved reservoir models and hydrocarbon recovery. The application of new numerical methods for analysing and modelling core and log data, the availability of core scanning facilities, and novel core measurements in both two and three dimensions, currently provide a framework for the development of new and exciting approaches to core-log integration.

Content: Petrophysics is the study of the physical properties of rocks in the broadest sense. As such it provides the fundamental understanding that enables geologists to describe the physical state of a rock, to predict its behaviour and to interpret geophysical data. Traditionally the emphasis has been on hydrocarbon reservoir evaluation, but it is equally applicable to the evolution of the Earth at all scales. This volume includes developments in pore-scale studies, electrical properties, seismic methods and measurement techniques, as well as reviewing aspects of petrophysical prediction and interpretation.

Content: There is much interest in gas hydrates in relation to their potential role as an importantdriver for climate change and as a major new energy source; however, many questionsremain, not least the size of the global hydrate budget. Much of the current uncertaintycentres on how hydrates are physically stored in sediments at a range of scales. Thisvolume details advances in our understanding of sediment-hosted hydrates, and containspapers covering a range of studies of real and artificial sediments containing bothmethane hydrates and CO2 hydrates. The papers include an examination of the techniquesused to locate, sample and characterize hydrates from natural, methane-rich systems, soas to understand them better. Other contributions consider the nature and stability ofsynthetic hydrates formed in the laboratory, which in turn improve our ability to makeaccurate predictive models.
