Wir gehen aus von der Tatsache, daß eine feste Beziehung besteht zwischen unseren Bewußtseinszuständen und bestimmten Zustanden unseres Körpers, insbesondere unseres Nervensystems mit seinen Sinnesapparaten, wobei dem Gehirn, vor allem dem Großhirn, eine führende Rolle zuzuerkennen ist. Letztere Zustände lassen sich mit physikalischen und chemischen Methoden untersuchen, und obwohl wir da noch weit von einem vollständigen oder auch nur annähernden Einblick entfernt sind, ist doch soviel sicher, daß die Gehirnprozesse physikalisch-chemische Vorgänge sind und als solche den Energiegesetzen unterliegen. Zwischen diesen Vorgängen, deren Erforschung in das Arbeitsgebiet der Physiologie fällt, und unseren Bewußtseinsvorgängen, bestehen, wie die Erfahrung lehrt, streng gesetzmäßige Beziehungen. Die Reizung der Netzhaut durch strahlende Energie von bestimmter Wellenlänge und Amplitude bewirkt einen zum Teil schon jetzt durch physikalische Methoden nachweisbaren Erregungsvorgang in der Netzhaut und dem Sehnerven, der sich durch verschiedene Gehirnteile (äußere Kniehöcker und Sehhügel, obere Vierhügel) bis in die Großhirnrinde fortsetzt, und diesem Erregungszustand entspricht bei völlig unversehrter Hirnrinde regelmäßig ein bestimmter Bewußtseinszustand, und zwar eine Lichtempfindung, deren Farbe von der Wellenlänge, deren Stärke von der Amplitude der als Reiz wirkenden Ätherschwingungen abhängig ist. Ist die Leitung derartig unterbrochen, daß die Erregung sich nicht bis in die 4* - 4 - Großhirnrinde fortsetzen kann, oder ist die letztere in hinreichend ausgedehnter Weise im Bereich der "Sehrinde" und über diesen Bereich hinaus zerstört, so tritt der entsprechende Bewußtseinszustand, die betreffende Gesichtsempfindung nicht ein
