Im Zuge des zunehmenden Qualitätsbewusstseins legen Unternehmen besonderen Wert auf die Produktqualität, d.h. auf die Reduktion von Ausschuss und Nachbearbeitung. Diese Qualitätssicht ist für die Betriebswirtschaftslehre zu eng: Das Qualitätsphänomen muss für praktische und theoretische Belange auch die Prozess- und Faktorqualität einschließen. Wolfgang Lücke untersucht den Begriff Qualität, macht Qualitätsänderungen in der Produktionsfunktion sichtbar und entwickelt eine Theorie der Qualität in der Produktions- und Kostentheorie. Da Quantität und Qualität einander bedingen und jeder technische Fortschritt einen Qualitätswandel mit sich bringt, der Interdependenzen zwischen Produkt-, Prozess- und Faktorqualität aufweist, müssen theoretische und praktische Konsequenzen aus der Qualitätspolitik mit ihren Folgen für Umsätze, Kosten und Gewinne beachtet werden. Nimmt man - wie üblich - in der Produktions- und Kostentheorie Qualitäten als konstant an, ignoriert man mögliche Auswirkungen der Einflussgröße Produkt-, Prozess- und Faktorqualitäten.
