Der Widerhall der Schüsse von Sarajevo am 28. Juni 1914 zeitigte eine Wirkung, die die Geschichte prägen sollte. Die unter den Völkern Europas seit Jahrzehnten still verborgenen Widersprüche mündeten in einem Krieg. Wien und auch Budapest bereiteten sich auf den Krieg vor, doch ein einziger Politiker, der Ministerpräsident des Königreichs Ungarn Graf István Tisza empfahl dem greisen Herrscher Franz Joseph I. gleich zweimal, den Konflikt mit Serbien nicht als Krieg auszutragen. Ungarn zog mehr als drei Millionen Männer ein. Die Truppenteile der Königlich ungarischen Honvéd kamen als acht Infanterie- und Zwei Kavallerie-Truppendivisionen auf den Kriegsschauplatz, allerdings gab es keine strukturmäßigen Reservetruppen hierfür, diesen Fehlbestand hätte man mit Truppen aus dem Landsturm ersetzen müssen. Diese Truppenteile wurden nach den im Frieden erstellten Mobilmachungsplänen gegliedert. Bei der Mobilmachung wurden an den Standorten der Truppendivisionen die Landsturmbrigaden und auch die Landsturm-Kavalleriedivisionen (in etwa Bataillone; d. Ü.) aufgestellt (bei der Honvéd zehn Landsturm-Husarendivisionen). Die von Ungarn aus in den Krieg ziehenden Millionen von Menschen wurden natürlich nicht nur in diese Divisionen eingereiht, sondern auch in andere Heeres- und Marinetruppenteile der gemeinsamen Streitmacht der Monarchie.
