Summer of 1959, Budapest, Hungary. Bela Kreuzer, an inveterate gambler who finally hit the jackpot, finds himself handcuffed and arrested. Having foolishly bragged about his big win, Bela was unaware the secret police were on his tail. Once in detention, Bela thinks this is because of his dubious activities on the race course, but it soon becomes apparent the real reason is his participation in the 1956 revolution. During the investigation, old friends, including his girlfriend, turn their backs on him. The only person he can trust is his cellmate. The prosecutor wants him hanged, but the detective just wants the case off his desk. Ultimately, the judge opts for a 15 year sentence which Bela serves to the last day. When he emerges from prison in 1974, he finds the world to be a very different place. (Baseline)
